About the Architect: Lionel Henry Pries (1897–1968) was an American architect and educator known for blending Spanish-Mediterranean influences with modern West Coast design. Born in San Francisco and trained at UC Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania, he developed a style defined by white stucco walls, red tile roofs, arched openings, and seamless indoor-outdoor living—hallmarks of early 20th-century California architecture. His work combined elegance with functionality, emphasizing comfort, natural light, and thoughtful spatial flow. After relocating to Seattle in 1928, he became a long-time professor at the University of Washington, shaping generations of architects through both his practice and teaching.
