When Condé Nast Traveler asked its readers to name the best food city in the U.S., they didn’t choose New York. Not L.A., not Chicago, not even San Francisco (and my oh my, SF has got some remarkable restaurants!). They chose Oakland.
That’s right—our vibrant, layered, relentlessly creative city just earned the #1 spot in the nation for food, as voted by travelers who know good taste when they see (and smell, and savor) it.
This is more than a feather in our cap—it’s a full-course celebration.
A Culinary Scene That’s Been Building for Decades
Oakland’s food culture has always been bold, soulful, and deeply rooted in community. What’s different now is that the rest of the world is catching on. From wood-fired sourdough at Pizzaiolo to elevated Cambodian at Nyum Bai, from Korean-Cali fusion at Daytrip to old-school tamales, authentic Nigerian cuisine and bustling Ethiopian cafés, the city’s restaurants reflect its people—diverse, daring, and unpretentious.
It’s not about flash. It’s about flavor. And it’s showing up in every neighborhood, in every kitchen that blends generations of tradition with fresh perspective.
Chefs Who Cook with Purpose
Oakland’s chefs aren’t just making food—they’re shaping culture, sparking conversation, and building community around the table. Many of them have been here quietly honing their craft for years. Others came to Oakland specifically because it’s a place where ideas and identities are celebrated—not watered down.
There’s a commitment to sourcing locally, cooking seasonally, and uplifting the people behind the plates. It’s delicious, yes—but it’s also deeply meaningful.
What This Means for Oakland
This recognition lands at a time when Oakland is proudly redefining itself—as a city of innovation, resilience, and beauty in all its raw, radiant forms. Food is just the beginning.
For locals, it’s a nod to what we already knew. For visitors and future homeowners? It’s one more reason to fall in love with the East Bay— as if the sunny days, plentiful forest trails and lively, well-connected communities aren’t enough.
This is a city where flavor meets soul. Where chefs take risks. Where meals tell stories. And where your next favorite restaurant might just be tucked into a historic building down the block from your future home.
So yes, Oakland is the best food city in the U.S. And no, we’re not surprised.
But we are hungry!
Beyond the Plate: A Community Rooted in Resilience
Oakland’s vibrancy extends beyond its culinary scene into the heart of its communities and schools. Our city’s diversity is mirrored in our classrooms, where students from myriad backgrounds come together to learn, share, and grow. While challenges exist, the spirit of Oakland is one of perseverance and unity. Families, educators, and local organizations are actively collaborating to uplift our youth, ensuring that every child has access to quality education and opportunities. This collective dedication reflects the same passion and creativity that have propelled our food scene to national acclaim.
